Jan 20, 2013 - Upgrade the firmware of your RAID controller and all devices. The best approach in your situation is to download a current HP Firmware. ![]() I have recently purchased a used HP DL380 G7 server which didnt come with any instructions or installation disks. I have the downloaded the VMWare ESXi ISO but before I install that I need a SmartStart Cd as per HPs website to configure the drive controllers so I can create drive arrays. Q1.) Where can I get this cd? Q2.) May be you know of a good source for documentation on how to configure the drives and what array would be the best suited? I have 4x148GB SAS 10k drives. I am planning to get 4 more drives to max out the remaining caddies but that's for later. The device has the following spec: ------------------------------------------------- HP Proliant DL380 G7 64GB DDR3 RAM 2 x Intel Xeon X5650 Hex Core 2.66GHz 4x 146Gb 2.5' SAS Drives Smart Array P410i / 256Mb ILO3 Remote Management DVD-ROM Multi Drive Embedded Quad Gigabit Ethernet 2x Redundant Power Supplies I am complete novice so a detailed explanation would be highly appreciated. Thank you for your help in advance. Raid 5 is not recommended. Search Spiceworks and you will find endless pages on it. Use Raid1 (mirror) or Raid 10 (mirror and stripe). The level of RAID will effect your redundancy, speed and final capacity. Research each option. Do a search on 'raid explained and benefits'. Btw RAID 10 (1+0) is not the sames as RAID 01 (0+1). My preference is RAID 10 and 4x146 will give you 292GB. As this is s/h, this may not a production server. If it is a play/learning, you could just use JBOD, have 4 volumes of 146GB or RAID 0 (no redundancy) and have 584GB. RAID is not a substitute for backups. As per the documentation for the P410 Controller it appears to support RAID 6. The one on my machine is P410i so seems likely. HP Smart Array P410 Controller --------------------------------------------- Key Features: The SA-P410 Controller supports up to 24 drives depending on the server implementation. Additional drives can be supported with cache and connection to the HP SAS Expander Card. Seamless upgrades from past generations and upgrades to next generation HP high performance and high capacity Serial Attached SCSI Smart Array controllers. 6Gb/s SAS technology delivers high performance and data bandwidth and contains full compatibility with 3Gb/s SATA technology. X8 PCI Express gen 2 host interface technology delivers high performance and data bandwidth up to 2 GB/s maximum bandwidth. Modular, easy-to-upgrade design lets you optimize performance by upgrading from 40-bit 256MB cache to 72-bit 512MB battery-backed write cache (BBWC) or 72-bit 512MB/1G Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC).Addition of the battery or flash backed cache upgrade enables array expansion, logical drive extension, RAID migration, and stripe size migration. Additionally, Smart Array Advanced Pack License key enables RAID 6 (ADG), 6+0, Advanced Capacity Expansion, Mirror Splitting and Recombining in Offline Mode, Drive Erase, Performance Optimization-Degraded Reads and Read Coalescing (VOD). Mix-and-match SAS and SATA hard drives, lets you deploy drive technology as needed to fit your computing environment. Software consistency among all Smart Array family products: Array Configuration Utility (ACU), Option ROM Configuration for Arrays (ORCA), Systems Insight Manager, Array Diagnostic Utility (ADU) and SmartStart.
